The volume contains a survey of all the surviving and restored architectural monuments in Novgorod and its suburbs from the 11th to the 18th century. Also reproduced are the 14th-century frescoes by Theophanes the Greek, as well as the icons of the Novgorod school (11th-18th centuries), preserved in the city's art museum and elsewhere in the Soviet Union. The edition presents a large number of historical and cultural relics, including unigue birch-bark letters (12th-14th centuries), specimens of early Russian illuminated manuscripts, with miniatures, headpieces and initials, and, finally, items of applied art (12th and 13th centuries) from the Gold Room of Novgorod's Palace of Facets. In addition, there are examples of wooden architecture which can be seen in the open-air museum zone.
