The fortress town was founded 1 355 years ago in the piedmont of picturesque Ukrainian Carpathians be tween the Bystrytsias rivers on the territory of Zabolottia village. Later on the town became an important trade, industrial and cultural center of Galicia. In 1662 the city adopted Magdeburg Law or Rights, granting it significant privileges, and was named Stanislaw6w. In 1962 the city was renamed into Ivano-Frankivsk to honor Ivan Franko, the famous Ukrainian writer, poet, public leader and politician (z tekstu).
