«Die große Zahl» überschreibt Erika Burkart den ersten Teil ihres Gedichtbandes, der mit den bestürzenden Versen «Alle besiegt die Müdigkeit, / die Liebenden und den Mörder» anhebt. Damit ist die Dimension des Raums entworfen, dem sich der Leser dieser Gedichte anvertrauen muß: Liebe, Tod, Liebesverlust, Schmerz, Hoffnung, scheue Momente des Einsseins mit der lebendigen Natur oder auch mit ganz gewöhnlichen Dingen und Gebrauchsgegenständen. Erika Burkarts Eindringen in unsre gegenständliche und doch geistdurchwirkte Welt hat etwas Wissendes, Unbestechliches. Die Dichterin verliert oder täuscht sich nicht. Sie faßt ihre Reaktion am richtigen Ort und setzt die Worte kühl und kühn Sie kann sich dies — im Einverständnis mit dem Elementaren und seiner geistigen Potenz — leisten; sie kann es sogar wagen — etwa im Titelgedicht «Schweigeminute» —, ihre Diktion zu rhetorischer Gewalt zu steigern. Der dritte Teil, «Alte Dinge», ist ein Buch der Erinnerungen: Winzige Einzelheiten, nicht selten verdichtet wie im überwachen Bewußtsein eines Kindes, zu bleibenden und blendenden Einsichten.
