Na okładce: The story of those who entered the New World through Ellis Island - in their own words.
Indeks.
Between 1892 and the early 1950s, nearly 15 million people streamed through Ellis Island in search of a new life. Here are the stories of those extraordinary immigrants, largely in their own poignant words.
Coming primarily from Southern and Eastern Europe, and from widely diverse backgrounds, the émigrés represented in this remarkable volume recount their adventures with dignity, wit, and unflagging honesty...

Frederick Douglass was born in slavery as Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey near Easton in Talbot County, Maryland. He was not sure of the exact year of his birth, but he knew that it was 1817 or 1818. As a young boy he was sent to Baltimore, to be a house servant, where he learned to read and write, with the assistance of his master's wife. In 1838 he escaped from slavery and went to New York City, where he married Anna Murray, a free colored woman whom he had met in Baltimore. Soon thereafter he changed his name to Frederick Douglass. In 1841 he addressed a convention of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society in Nantucket and so greatly impressed the group that they immediately employed him as an agent. He was such an impressive orator that numerous persons doubted if he had ever been a slave, so he Wrote Narrative of The Life of Frederick Douglass.

Of Swedish Ways / by Lilly Lorénzen ; illustrated by Dick Sutphen. - New York ; Hagerstown ; San Francisco ; London : Barnes & Noble Books, 1978. - 276 stron : ilustracje ; 20 cm.
Bibliografia na stronach [275]-276.
Here is a book filled with the sights and sounds of a people steeped in a background of fine old traditions. It is a charming account of Swedish customs that goes beyond their democratic monarchy, their progressive social-welfare programs, their avant-garde movies, and their excellence of design.
For Swedish-Americans this book will have special meaning: the joy of reminiscing about those traditions (some possibly forgotten) that enriched and helped shape their lives. For their children it is a journey to a world they may not know of first hand. And for the tourist it affords a unique behind-the-scenes look not to be found in travel books, and is certain to enhance the pleasure of their visit.
