Auf die Spur nach der Sprache der Wappen machte sich Autodidakt Gert Oswald mit diesem Standardwerk. Sie begegnen uns auf Spaziergängen, in den Mantel- und Degenfilmen, auf so manchem Briefbogen oder in historischen Museen. Die prächtigen, seit Jahren häufig wieder in Farbe restaurierten Wappenschilde an alten Burgen und Schlössern regen nicht nur so manchen Touristen zu Deutungen an.
Die Wappenkunde – bzw. Heraldik im Fachausdruck – bedient sich einer speziellen Fachsprache zur Beschreibung von Wappen und ihrer Details. Diese Sprache wird im vorliegenden Lexikon, das etwa 4.000 Stichwörter umfasst, verständlich und durch die hohe Zahl an farbigen Abbildungen sehr anschaulich erläutert. Der alphabetische Aufbau von A wie Apfelkreuz bis Z wie Zwillingsbalken garantiert eine praktische und einfache Handhabung.
Es spricht für sich, wenn sich ein Buch über 25 Jahre konkurrenzlos am Markt behauptet. Lange Zeit vergriffen begeisterte die letzte Auflage Heraldiker, Numismatiker, Phaleristiker, Historiker und Genealogen gleichermaßen, denn auch fachübergreifend ist dieses Lexikon ein wertvoller Ratgeber.

Dieses Nachschlagewerk ist vor allem gedacht für Lehrer der deutschen Sprache, für Studenten des Fachlehrerstudiums und für Schüler höherer Klassen der allgemeinbildenden polytechnischen Oberschulen. Darüber hinaus kann es nützlich für jeden sein, der an der deutschen Sprache interessiert ist. Dieser Adressatenkreis war bestimmend für die Auswahl der Stichwörter. Sie ergeben sich primär aus den Lehrprogrammen für die linguistischen Disziplinen und für die Methodik des Muttersprachunterrichts. Weiterhin werden Termini aus den Materialien der allgemeinbildenden Schule und grundlegende Termini der einzelnen linguistischen Disziplinen übernommen. Von den linguistischen Disziplinen werden vor allem Sprachtheorie, Grammatik, Wortbildung, Lexikologie, Orthogräphie, Sprachliche Kommunikation/Stilistik und Sprachgeschichte berücksichtigt. Bei der Begriffsbestimmung der Stichwörter geht es über die rein linguistische Bearbeitung hinaus um die Verbindung linguistischer und methodisch-didaktischer Interpretation, um auf diese Weise fachwissenschaftliche Kenntnisse anwendungsbereitzu machen für die unterrichtliche Tätigkeit des Lehrers. Bei der Ausarbeitung der Stichwörter wurden Literaturverweise ausgespart. Bestimmende Zielstellung war es; dem Nutzer eine rasche, sprachlich klare, einleuchtende Orientierung zu vermitteln, und dies auf dem Stand gegenwärtiger Wissenschaftsarbeit. Auf das Referieren von Auffassungen verschiedener Wissenschaftsschulen und einzelner Wissenschaftler wurde ebenso verzichtet wie auf die Darstellung divergierender Standpunkte. Die Autoren danken Frau Prof. em. Dr. habil. Anneliese Claus-Schulze, Herrn Prof. Dr. sc. Günter Starke, Herrn Prof. Dr. sc. Peter Suchsland und Frau Jutta Günther recht herzlich für ihre fördernden Ratschläge.
