"Open City" brings together the work of 19 artists to examine the history of street photography over the course of the last half-century. It takes as its starting point photographers such as Lee Friedlander and William Klein, who were instrumental in the development of a radical new approach to documentary photography, aided by the increasing portablility of camera equipment. For these and subsequent artists, the street has continued to hold an inherent fascination as a theater of human activity. "Open City" reflects the diversity of the work stimulated by this revolution: from Terry Donovan's advertising and fashion photography, to Susan Meiselas's photographs of war-torn Nicaragua and Raghubir Singh's vibrant and colorful images of his native India. Color, now considered a key tool for photographers, has only in recent years been legitimized, in part thanks to the work of American photographer William Eggleston during the late 1970s. Open City also includes the work of a newer generation of photographers, including the Turner Prize-winning Wolfgang Tillmans, and examines the the way in which contemporary practice continues to react to and build upon the tradition of street photography.

Kein Künstler ist populärer als Pablo Picasso, keiner ist häufiger ausgestellt und intensiver erforscht worden. Und dennoch gibt es einen weißen Fleck auf der Landkarte seines opulenten Werkes: die Bade- und Spielszenen am Strand, die zeitlebens ein Faszinosum für Picasso darstellten - von der frühkubistischen Schaffensphase Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts bis zum Spätwerk der 1960er Jahre. In der wiederkehrenden Umkreisung des Sujets entwickelt Picasso (1881-1973) immer neue inhaltliche und formale Ansätze, deren Vielfalt und Radikalität aus der Beobachtung der ungebundenen Körperbewegung im Freien hervorgeht. Während Emil Nolde für seine dramatischen Meeresansichten und farbigen Blumengärten berühmt ist, erfuhr seine Vorliebe für das Fantastische und Groteske bisher weniger Beachtung. Welch maßgeblichen Einfluss sie aber auf sein künstlerisches Werk hatten, wird aus seiner Autobiografie und zahlreichen Briefen deutlich. Neben seinem ersten Ölgemälde, den Bergriesen (1895/96), spiegeln auch seine Bergpostkarten noch vor 1900 seine Faszination für das Fantastische: Die Schweizer Berge erhalten dort bizarre menschliche Physiognomien. Die Abkehr von der Realität zugunsten einer grotesken Gegenwelt zieht sich durch sein Werk, von diesen Anfängen über die Grotesken (1905) und Aquarelle von 1918/1919 bis in die Jahre des Berufsverbots unter den Nationalsozialisten. Der Katalog zur Ausstellung, die auch zuvor nie gezeigte Arbeiten präsentiert, entdeckt erstmals eine faszinierende Seite des großen Malers und Aquarellisten neu.
