Bibliografia na początku książki.
In “The Aspern Papers,” an unnamed American editor rents a room in Venice in the home of Juliana Bordereau, the elderly mistress of Jeffrey Aspern, a deceased Romantic poet, in order to procure from her the poet’s papers. Bordereau, a stingy, domineering woman, lives with her timid middle-aged niece, Tina. (The niece was named Tita until James revised the text in 1908.) The manipulative editor, obsessed with possessing the Aspern papers, exhibits progressively unscrupulous behaviour, such as assuming an alias, making false romantic overtures to Tina, and attempting burglary. When Bordereau dies, Tina offers the editor the coveted documents on the condition that he marry her. He initially refuses but returns to negotiate, only to find that Tina, in a display of newfound dignity, has burned the papers. The novelette was inspired by an actual incident involving Claire Clairmont, once the mistress of Lord Byron.

The Hazel Wood / Melissa Albert. - London : Penguin Books, 2018. - 358, [1] strona ; 20 cm.
Na górze okładki: Stay Away From... .
The Hazel Wood series by Melissa Albert follows seventeen-year-old Alice Proserpine as she journeys into the world of her grandmother's fairy tales. Deliciously dark and mesmerizing, the Hazel Wood is just the beginning of the worlds beyond, "a place where stories and real life convene, where magic contains truth, and the world as it appears false, and where just about anything can happen, particularly in the pages of a good book".

Na dole okładki: Synge, Yeats and O'Casey.
The Countess Cathleen / W. B. Yeats. The Playboy of the Western World / J. M. Synge. Cock-a-doodle Dandy / Sean O'Casey.
Riots greeted the first performance of The Playboy of the Western World at Dublin's Abbey Theatre on 26 January 1907. Eggs, potatoes and even a slice of fruit cake were hurled at the actors during subsequent performances, and it seems unlikely that much of the actual play could have been heard in the uproar. Synge's The Playboy of the Western World, with the two other plays in this volume, Yeats's The Countess Cathleen (1892) and O'Casey's Cock-a-doodle Dandy (1949), mark vital stages in the rich explosion of Irish drama that first made itself heard at the turn of the century and gathered momentum during the Easter Rising of 1916 and the Civil War.

While Mansfield Park appears in some ways to continue where Pride and Prejudice left off, it is, as Kathryn Sutherland shows in her illuminating Introduction, a much darker work, which challenges 'the very values (of tradition, stability, retirement and faithfulness) it appears to endorse'.

Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo.
Meanwhile Elinor, always sensitive to social convention, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her.
Through their parallel experience of love - and its threatened loss - the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love.

The Terminal Beach / J.G. Ballard. - repr. - Harmondsworth : Penguin Books, 1979. - 223, [1] strona ; 18 cm.
(Science Fiction)
Zawiera: A Question of Re-entry ; The Drowned Giant ; End-Game ; The Illuminated Man ; The Replile Enclosure ; Deep End ; The Volcano Dances ; Billennium ; The Gioconda of the Twilight Noon ; The Lost Leonardo.
We are living in J.G. Ballard’s world, that much is clear. So precise were Ballard’s not-so-future predictions that it is beyond cliché to link our current political, technological, architectural and even social states to the man’s writing.
But, outside of his great 1970s social-dystopias and his morbid retail-park nightmares of the millennial period, Ballard’s shorter writing has just as much to say about our time as his more famous novels.
The Terminal Beach is one of Ballard's most brilliant collections of short stories, ranging from the title story's disturbing picture of an abandoned atomic testing island in the Pacific to the shocking Oedipal fantasy of "The Gioconda of the Twilight Noon". At the heart of the stories lies the bitter paradox that the extraordinary creative power of man's imagination is matched only by his reckless instinct for destruction.
