Das Studienbuch Linguistik eignet sich hervorragend zur Begleitung eines Seminares oder einer Vorlesung. Aber auch zum Lückenfüllen im Hauptstudium tut es seinen Dienst, zum Beispiel bei der Vorbereitung eines Hauptseminares. In elf Kapiteln werden die grundlegenden linguistischen Teildisziplinen besprochen: Semiotik, Grammatik, Semantik, Pragmatik, Textlinguistik, Gesprächsanalyse, Soziolinguistik, Psycholinguistik, Historiolinguistik und Phonetik/Phonologie sind jeweils in sich geschlossene Einzelkapitel. Jedes Kapitel beginnt mit einer kurzen Einleitung, die einen guten Überblick über das Thema dieser Teildisziplin gibt, so daß man zuerst einmal alle diese Einleitungen lesen kann, um hinter die Begriffe zu blicken. Die Aufsätze selber sind sehr gut strukturiert. Durch größere und kleinere Buchstaben kann man den durchlaufenden Text unterscheiden von ergänzenden Passagen. So kann mal nochmals 2 Arten der Intensität der Beschäftigung mit einem Thema wählen. Besonders hilfreich sind auch die Lesehinweise zu jedem Kapitel
