Kalevala / Elias Lönnrot. - [miejsce nieznane] : FilRougeViceversa : Legimi, 2021.
In primeval times, a maiden, Beauteous Daughter of the Ether, Passed for ages her existence In the great expanse of heaven, O'er the prairies yet enfolded. Wearisome the maiden growing, Her existence sad and hopeless, Thus alone to live for ages In the infinite expanses Of the air above the sea-foam, In the far outstretching spaces, In a solitude of ether, She descended to the ocean, Waves her coach, and waves her pillow. Thereupon the rising storm-wind Flying from the East in fierceness, Whips the ocean into surges, Strikes the stars with sprays of ocean Till the waves are white with fervor.

"In the land of ice and song, a mystical struggle for the ultimate power begins." Woven from centuries of Karelian song and legend, The Kalevala tells the story of the creation of the world and the heroic deeds of the eternal shaman-bard Väinämöinen. At its center is the quest for the Sampo—a magical artifact of infinite wealth forged by the master smith Ilmarinen. As the heroes of the South battle the dark forces of Pohjola and its mistress Louhi, Lönnrot creates a tapestry of enchantment, tragedy, and ancient wisdom. Written in the distinctive "Kalevala meter" that inspired Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, this epic is a profound exploration of the power of words, music, and the natural world. The Quest for the Sampo: The driving force of the epic is the Sampo, a mysterious mill that grinds out flour, salt, and gold. Its forging and eventual theft represent the struggle between civilization and the untamed wilderness, serving as a powerful symbol of Finnish prosperity and identity. Why It Is a Cultural Masterpiece: The Kalevala did more than preserve folklore; it helped define a nation. Its unique trochaic tetrameter and its reverence for the "magic of singing" make it one of the most rhythmic and hypnotic works in world literature. Enter a world of ancient song. The Kalevala is Finland's national epic, on the basis of which the entire Finnish culture has been built, but what would the Kalevala have to say today? I started to read the Kalevala. There arose questions that I wanted to begin to clarify. I photographed, acquired source material and looked for connections between the Kalevala and the lives of modern Finns. I became particularly interested in man's relationship with nature, because I think that modern man has distanced himself from nature, does not know what it has to offer and does not know how to adapt his activities to the limits of nature. The goal of my Nature Speaks in the Kalevala project is to bring the Kalevala closer to people. I want to hear what ancient man might have to say today. That is the message I want to convey with this book and my pictures. The book has been published in addition to Finnish also in English and Estonian.

The Kalevala is the great Finnish epic, which like the Iliad and the Odyssey, grew out of a rich oral tradition with prehistoric roots. During the first millenium of our era, speakers of Uralic languages (those outside the Indo-European group) who had settled in the Baltic region of Karelia, that straddles the border of eastern Finland and north-west Russia, developed an oral poetry that was to last into the nineteenth century. This poetry provided the basis of the Kalevala. It was assembled in the 1840s by the Finnish scholar Elias Lönnrot, who took `dictation' from the performance of a folk singer, in much the same way as our great collections from the past, from Homeric poems to medieval songs and epics, have probably been set down. Published in 1849, it played a central role in the march towards Finnish independence and inspired some of Sibelius's greatest works.
