"The content of painting is painting. Nothing has to be deciphered. The content, filled with happiness speaks to that person to whom each form is alive, i. e. has content" (Wassily Kandinsky)

Salvador Dalí : 1904-1989 / Robert Descharnes Gilles Neret. - Köln : Benedikt Taschen, cop. 1989. - 224 s. : ; il. kolor. ; 30 cm.
Bibliogr.
Picasso called Dalí "an outboard motor that's always running". Dalí thought himself a genius with a right to indulge in whatever lunacy popped into his head. Painter, sculptor, writer and filmmaker. Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) was one of the century's greatest exhibitionists and eccentrics - and was rewarded with fierce controversy wherever he went. He was one of the first to apply the insights of painting: He brought extraordinary sensivity, imagination and concern for precision to bear upon submerged levels of consciousness. This lively biography presents the infamous Surrealist in full colour and in his own words. His provocative ideas are all here, from the soft watches to the notorius burning giraffe. And the fantastic phenomenon that was Salvador Dalí is grasped entire, and placed in his various contexts.

Erben's book on Miró is a rare example of a successful book on artist. Himself a painter and writer, Erben succeeded in engaging his great "colleague" in numerous private conversations at the artist's house in Mallorca. In these talks Miró gave Erben many interesting and invaluable insights into his art as well as his own interpretations of his most significant works. The last chapter of this book has been written by Hajo Düchting, an art historian and painter, [...], who has supplemented Erben's text with a chapter on Miro's later life as well as numerous interpretations of a selected number of works.

"It is my wish to come very close, strikingly close, to the times in which we live, without submitting to artistic dogma...I need the connection to the world of senses, the courage to portray ugliness, life as it comes." - Otto Dix In the 1920s, Otto Dix was the artist of Neue Sachlichkeit, the New Objectivity, par excellence. Painting in a very realistic, almost photographic style, he chose as subjects the poverty, violence, death, and war that he experienced as a soldier in World War I. After this terrible experience, he painted the famous triptych The War. Dix staged the world as a play, a grotesque farce. But the form he chose to do so was based on the classical canon of beauty. Dix lived his life and served art, for he adhered to the age-old rule that the American painter Ad Reinhardt put in a nutshell: "Life is life, and art is art."

Pop Art / Tilman Osterwold. - Köln : Benedikt Taschen, cop. 1990. - 239, [1] s. : il. ; 30 cm.
Bibliogr.
In the early 1960s a new generation of artists vehemently called attention to themselves. For the first time, art had discovered the colourful world of merchandise, the mass media, the entertainment industry and advertising. "Everything is beautiful", raved Andy Warhol, in raptures at glamour of modern life, the consumer society, the world of the media and its stars. And in so saying, he was expressing the feelings of a generation who felt their age was dawning, an age of "love" and "freedom". In art too, a new attitude towards the present was making itself felt. Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Tom Wesselmann, Richard Hamilton and many other artists were discovering Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Coca-Cola, comics, advertising, household appliances and food cans as an independent aesthetic reality.Popularity and triviality were no longer terms of abuse, but were central to new understanding of an art whose aim was to break down the barriers between art and life. The author gives us a detailed account of the styles, themes and sources of Pop Art, investigating its development in different countries and providing biographies of its leading exponents.

The art of the still life / Norbert Schneider. - Kőln : Benedikt Taschen, copyright 1990. - 216 stron : ilustracje ; 30 cm.
Bibliografia na stronie 215.
How do objects in a still life reflect the habits, thoughts and aspirations of the time? This one is a one of the questions which Norbert Schneider asks in this book. The period between the late Middle Ages and the 17th century was without doubt the heyday of the still life. It is an art form which gives us valuable insights into chnges of mentality and philosophy as well as people's notion of death. Still life chart the history of scientific discoveries and their acceptance as well as the gradual replacement of the medieval concepts of the world.

No other architect in the history of Western art has had an influence so spontaneous and yet so enduring as Andrea Palladio. Palladianism broke through all cultural stylistic barriers. It spread not only throughout the Neo-Latin nations but held Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and the countries of Eastern Europe in its sway and formed the lineaments of English architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries. Professor Manfred Wundram describes Palladio's works on a fascunating journey between Padua and Udine. The Italian photographer Paolo Marton has photographed Palladio's palaces, villas and sacred buildings with great empathy.
