Index.
Literary criticism is traditionally defined as the art of judicius condemnationor praise : Samuel Johnson, for instance, describes the critic as " a man able to distinguish the faults and beauties of writing".But in our own time, the term has taken on wider significance, to include the analysis, elucidation, and interpretation of literature.
With his awareness of how complex the literary work is, the modern critic usually recognizes that he may have to give close attention to detail, consider some of the relevant historical background, and even reinterpret the essential meaning of a piece of writing before he can pass judgment upon it.Non only the professional critic but also the serious student of literature is obliged to recognize the complicated nature of such a critical process. The aime of this book is to help him do so, and to describe for him some ways of looking at a work, both in itself and in its larger context.
