Zu Goethes 80. Geburtstag ist das Wetter schwül, und die ockergelbe Fassade des Hauses am Frauenplan trägt Girlandenschmuck aus Tannengrün. Der ministerielle Hausstand, berühmt für seine Pracht, ist vorbereitet zum Empfang der vielen Gäste aus nah und fern. Denn im Weimarer Mirkokosmos ist nun einmal Goethe die Zentralsonne, und was um sie kreist, ist ihrer magischen Kraft unterworfen.Wahrhaftig,die "Begegnurgin Weimar" ist alles andere eher als eine Novelle. Wie aber könnte der Erzähler dafür einstehen, daß die Gespräche und Gedanken, die sie be-herrschen, historisch sind? In egoistischer großzügigkeit beansprucht er für seine Improvisation die Freiheit, Begebenheiten unter »möglichen oder unmöglichen Bedingungen als möglich darzustellen" (Goethe). Improvisation nennt er, was gerade noch als Miniatur gelten könnte. Immerhin hält er für wichtig, anzudeuten, daß er seine Geschichte durchaus nicht mit frechen Händen aus der Luft griff, daß er Manchem und Manchen dankbar zu sein hat, nicht zum wenigsten seinem Freund, dem Direktor des Goethe-Schiller-Archivs in Weimar, Professor Scholz, und dessen liebenswürdiger Mitarbeiterin Hedwig Voegt.Was die Figur des zu geheimnisvollen Zwecken in Weimar auftauchenden Mr. Sherwood betrifft, bittet der Erzähler diejenigen unter seinen Lesern um Aufmerksamkeit für sie, welche an der Historie Interesse nehmen.
