Niemand weiß, wo der geheimnisvolle Mondsee liegt. Zu diesem eiskalten See steigt ab und zu der Mond herab und nimmt darin ein Bad. Danach schüttelt er sich, und zurück bleiben Edelsteine, Gold und Silberstaub. Auf der Suche nach einem verlorenen Schaf gelangt der Hirte Borka zum Silbersee. Vom habgierigen König wird er gezwungen, das Geheimnis preiszugeben. Der König und sein Gefolge raffen am Ufer des Mondsees so viel von den Kostbarkeiten, wie sie nur können, und folgen zu ihrem Verhängnis nicht dem dringenden Rat, daß sie den See vor Sonnenaufgang wieder verlassen haben müssen. Ivan Gantschevs Bilder sind mehr als nur Illustrationen. Wieder zaubert er uns Landschaften und Traumgegenden ins Buch, von denen der Beschauer wünscht, selbst hineinzusteigen, um die Schönheit völlig genießen zu können.
