Bach, der vor 250 Jahren starb, gehört zu den größten Komponisten, die die Welt kennt, und zusammen mit Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart und Ludwig van Beethoven zu den bedeutendsten im deutschsprachigen Kulturraum. Er wurde in eine weitverzweigte thüringische Musikerfamilie hineingeboren und gab die musikalische Begabung an seine zahlreichen Kinder weiter: Vier seiner Söhne wurden ihrerseits bedeutende Komponisten. Nach beruflichen Stationen als Organist in Arnstadt, Mühlhausen und Weimar und als Hofkapellmeister in Köthen kam er als Thomaskantor und Musikdirektor nach Leipzig. Sein Schaffen steht in der Tradition der mitteldeutschen Musik der Barockzeit, weist aber über Länder- und Epochengrenzen weit hinaus. Heute werden seine Werke in Kirchen und Konzertsälen der ganzen Welt aufgeführt.
Martin Geck (1936-2019) verheiratet mit Adelheid Prinzessin zu Salm-Salm,war Professor an der Universität Dortmund und Leiter der Internationalen Dortmunder Bach-Symposien. Er hat zahlreiche Bücher über die deutsche Musikgeschichte des 17. bis 19. Jahrhunderts geschrieben und gilt als einer der international bekanntesten Bach-Forscher. Seine letzten Veröffentlichungen: »Denn Alles findet bei Bach statt. Erforschtes und Erfahrenes« (1999), »Von Beethoven bis Mahler. Leben und Werk der großen Komponisten des 19. Jahrhunderts« (2000), »Bach. Das Leben, das Werk« (2000, in Deutsch, Englisch und Japanisch).

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, der vor 25o Jahren in Frankfurt am Main geboren wurde, gehört zu den Großen der Weltliteratur. Seine weltweite Anerkennung gründet sich vor allem auf das zweiteilige Drama »Faust«, an dem er mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert gearbeitet hat und das in alle Kultursprachen übersetzt worden ist. Doch auch sein umfangreiches lyrisches Werk hat in vielen Ländern Freunde gefunden, und so ist er mit Gedichten und Balladen in den Anthologien rund um den Globus vertreten. Zeitlebens galt sein besonderes Interesse den Naturwissenschaften. Er hinterließ eine Vielzahl von Schriften zu wissenschaftlichen Themen und umfangreiche Sammlungen, die noch heute in Weimar zu besichtigen sind. Goethe war 1776 von Herzog Carl August zu Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach nach Weimar berufen worden und diente dem kleinen Herzogtum bis in sein hohes Alter als Minister.
