Das 'Nibelungenlied' ist die bedeutendste Heldensage der höfischen Zeit und besaß lange den Rang eines deutschen Nationalepos. Ungeachtet des ideologischen Mißbrauchs, dem es sich immer wieder ausgesetzt sah, sind seine faszinierende Motivfülle und schillernde Strahlkraft bis heute unbestritten. Erzählt wird die Liebesgeschichte von Siegfried und Kriemhild, eingebettet in die Schilderung prachtvollen höfischen Lebens und die Beschreibung blutiger Schlachten. Im Mittelpunkt steht Kriemhilds furchtbare Rache nach der Ermordung Siegfrieds durch Hagen.
