Leningrad's Hermitage collection of French art from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century is one of the best in the world. It consists of more than 300 paintings, many of which rate among the world's finest. Preserved here are eight pictures by Claude Monet, six by Auguste Renoir, eleven by Paul Cezanne, fifteen by Paul Gauguin, thirty-eight by Pablo Picasso, and thirty-seven by Henri Matisse. This beautiful volume offers a complete publication of the uniąue collection from the Hermitage, with full-colour reproductions and close-ups of many details. The reproductions are of a high quality and give the viewer the impression that he is seeing the original works. The Introduction is dedicated to the history and distinguishing features of the collection. Short notes accompanying each reproduction inform the reader of the picture's size, provenance and techniąue.

Tallinn, the capital of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic, is a great administrative, industrial old cultural centre. It has a population of about 450 thousand. The town covers an area of over 150 square kilometres. The modern housing developments and the old districts fit in well together: the straight lines of the twentieth century architecture are in consonance with the Gothic steeples, the ornate Baroque and monumental Neoclassical buildings. The town is rich in relics: 156 ancient buildings and 287 works of figurative art are under state protection, and there are 228 objects listed among historical monuments. Tallinn has four higher educational establishments, five theatres, a number of clubs, libraries, research and design institutes. All this attracts a great number of tourists from the other republics of the Soviet Union, as well as from many foreign countries.

Bibliografia na stronach 514-521. Indeks.
The artistic genius of the Dutch has always found its highest expression in painting. Their canvases are valued the world over for warmth, liveliness, colour, keen observation of human behaviour and peerless execution. Russian collectors over the centuries amassed an extraordinary ireasure of Dutch works, studded with jewels by such masters as Rembrandt, Lucas van Leyden, Frans Hals, Vincent van Gogh, and Kees van Dongen. The volume is broad in scope, covering five centuries of Dutch painting from its beginnings in the fifteenth century. It is particularly rich in works from the seventeenth century - the Golden Age of Dutch art. The Introduction with its account of how the Soviet Union acquired its impressive collection was written by the late Yury Kuznetsov, an eminent Soviet art historian. The plates are accompanied by individual commentaries that offer brief biographies of the artists, the history of each work and much other informalion that will be of interest to scholars and art lovers alike. The author of the commentaries is Irene Linnik, an authority on European painting, whose work on the attribution of Dutch paintings in Soviet collections, has won universal recognition.

Bibliografia na stronach [409-418]. Indeks.
The collection of graphic works in the Hermitage is rightly considered one of the best in the world. The pen and pencil drawings, watercolours, chalk drawings and pastels housed in the Hermitage Print Room enable us to trace the evolution of drawing in Western European art from the Renaissance up to present day. Different national schools and artistic trends of Western Europę are amply illustrated in the Hermitage collection. The Flemish, Dutch, and French schools are particularly well represented, as these schools were most popular when the collection was first put together. The collection contains works by Old Masters, such as Titian, Yeronese, Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Dürer, Clouet, and Watteau, and also morę recent masterpieces by Manet, Degas, Liebermann, and Picasso.

The town of Pushkin (formerly Tsarskoye Selo), called so in memory of the great Russian poet, who studied there at the Lyceum (1811-17) and lived in the summer of 1831, is also famous for its magnificent palace and park complex, created in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The focal point of the ensemble is the Catherine Palace, the work of the architects Mikhail Zemtsov, Andrei Kvasov and Savva Chevakinsky. In 1752-56 Bartolommeo Rastrelli completed the project and decorated the palace exteriors. With its sumptuous facade, measuring 300 metres in length, profusion of sculpture, stucco and painted decorations, the palace ranks among the masterpieces of the Russian Baroque style. The luxurious interiors of the palace were created after the designs by Bartolommeo Rastrelli, Charles Cameron, Vasily Stasov, Ippolito Monighetti, to name but a few. The numerous architectural monuments of the town, reduced to ashes during the Second World War, have been restored to their original state by the heroic efforts of restorers, builders and museum workers, and evoke the admiration of thousands of Soviet and foreign tourists. The palace is surrounded by the magnificent Catherine and Alexander Parks with many pavilions, statues and decorative structures. In addition to all these specimens of Russian art, the book reproduces a large number of objects made of coloured stone, porcelain and crystal by Russian and Western European craftsmen, housed in the Pushkin palaces. The edition contains an extensive recounting of the history of the ensemble's formation and touches on the work of Soviet restorers. Of special interest are documentary photographs showing the palaces and parks of Pushkin reduced to ruins during the Second World War.
