In a windowless shack in the woods, Lena's life and that of her two children follows the rules set by their captor, the father: meals, bathroom visits, study time are strictly scheduled and meticulously observed.
He protects his family from the dangers lurking in the outside world and makes sure that his children will always have a mother to look after them.
One day Lena manages to flee - but the nightmare continues. It seems as if her tormentor wants to get back what belongs to him.
And then there is the question whether she really is the woman called "Lena," who disappeared without a trace 14 years ago.
The police and Lena's family are all desperately trying to piece together a puzzle which doesn't quite seem to fit.

Now, almost 150 years later, Collette is a lonely artist running an elite fine art school for children in upstate New York.
But her life is suddenly upended by the arrival of a gifted child from a troubled home, the return of a stalking presence from her past, and her own mysteriously growing hunger for blood.

Graveyard shift / M. L. Rio. - New York : Flatiron Books, 2024. - 126, [1] strona ; 21 cm
Every night, in the college’s ancient cemetery, five people cross paths as they work the late shift: a bartender, a rideshare driver, a hotel receptionist, the steward of the derelict church that looms over them, and the editor-in-chief of the college paper, always in search of a story.
One dark October evening in the defunct churchyard, they find a hole that wasn’t there before. A fresh, open grave where no grave should be.
But who dug it, and for whom? Before they go their separate ways, the gravedigger returns.
As they trail him through the night, they realize he may be the key to a string of strange happenings around town that have made headlines for the last few weeks - and that they may be closer to the mystery than they thought.
