Few photographers have created such a legacy as Edward Weston (1886-1958): After a decade of successfully making photographs with painterly soft-focus techniques, Weston became the key pioneer of the school of precise and sharp presentation, dubbed "Straight Photography". Through the 1920s, 30s and 40s, Weston was a major force, pushing forward the art of photography. His photographs are monuments of sensual realism, perfectly composed images of stillness that sear with passion and intensity. Marc Chagall, der am 28. Mirz 1985 im Alter von 97 Jahren starb, gilt als der Malerpoet schlechthin. Er hat wie kein anderer Kiinstler dieses Jahrhunderts weltweit Faszination und Bewunderung ausgelóst. Der Schriftsteller und Maler Henry Miller beschrieb ihn als einen „Dichter mit den Fliigeln eines Malers”. Zeitlebens war Chagall enger mit Schriftstellern als mit Malern befreundet; denn er miBtraute malerischen Theorien, vor allem, wenn sie dogmatisch auftraten. So liefś er sich weder vom Kubismus noch vom Surrealismus vereinnahmen, begriindete keine eigene Schule und hatte keine Nachfolger. Er blieb der grofse Einzelgdnger, dessen zeitloses CEuvre sich bis heute allen Klassifikationsversuchen widerseczt.

Erben's book on Miró is a rare example of a successful book on artist. Himself a painter and writer, Erben succeeded in engaging his great "colleague" in numerous private conversations at the artist's house in Mallorca. In these talks Miró gave Erben many interesting and invaluable insights into his art as well as his own interpretations of his most significant works.
