Our understanding of mental health and illness, and its relation to inflammation, is undergoing a revolution. Today, research is blending the traditional laboratory with the psychologist's couch, rethinking the roots of food as medicine, and scrutinising people from head to toilet. In Get Your Brain off Grain, experts in the field of psychiatry and nutrition explain the emerging evidence-based insight as to gluten's effect not only on the body, but on the mind. Step by step, they explore the relationships between the gut, immunity, and brain health as they relate to gluten sensitivity. They examine the mechanics of gluten sensitivity across the digestive, immune, and nervous systems to shed light on why certain people may be vulnerable to gluten sensitivity and importantly, how a gluten-free diet may help to alleviate symptoms in some people. Spanning schizophrenia, autism, anxiety, depression, seizure disorders, and more, this book considers just how far the immune reaction associated with gluten sensitivity can reach beyond the gut and physical symptoms. Everyone knows someone with a psychiatric condition—and for that reason, everyone deserves a science-backed resource to help explain what many doctors and clinicians may not yet know about. Patients, families, and clinicians alike can reference this practical review detailing what the field has learned about the causes of gluten sensitivity-related disease, the genetic factors that influence the likelihood of developing gluten sensitivity, and how gluten sensitivity makes its impact on various psychiatric and neurological illnesses. Additionally, the book informs readers about responsible testing for different kinds of gluten sensitivity, challenges and pitfalls to a gluten-free diet, and resources for help along the way.

Experienced cookery teacher and writer Beverley Jarvis has put together this book of 75+ delicious recipes to inspire her super-ager peers to eat well, with all the nutrients that are increasingly needed as we get older, and to cook whole-foods from scratch quickly and easily so that meals are enjoyable but never a chore. Her guiding principles, developed through her ongoing work with the organisation u3a (University of the Third Age), are: (mostly) no more than 35 minutes to prepare and cook; use short-cuts provided these don't compromise nutritional quality; physical activity is good but use tips to make cooking less physically demanding; use fresh, health-enhancing ingredients. With most recipes being for two people this is the perfect book for empty-nesters and those who have recently retired. The book is completed with some dinner party recipes which take longer to prepare and cook, but are well worth the time when you have friends coming round.

Since the publication of its first edition in April 2014, Dr Myhill's guide to understanding and overcoming CFS/ME has become a must-read for sufferers from this poorly understood condition. As one example of the nearly 300 5-star reviewers on Amazon says: 'Extremely useful, well written, concepts well explained, absolutely great investment of money and time in reading it.' In the seven years since the second edition was published (January 2017) both new research and new clinical findings have thrown further light onto a condition that for sufferers is life-stopping but for many doctors is 'all in the mind'. Most recently, the UK's NICE guidelines have been updated and Long Covid has changed mainstream perceptions of post-viral fatigue, while Dr Myhill has looked further beyond mainstream medicine into often-ignored more traditional treatments including methylene blue and DMSO. Dr Myhill, supported by expert patient Craig Robinson, has fully rewritten and updated her book to include new insights throughout and new chapters on the PK diet, photodynamic therapy, micro-immunotherapy, ME and Long Covid, and the politics of CFS and ME.
